About Us

Float Your Boat: About Us

Float Your Boat Media supports the safe, fair employment and economic advancement of under-served youth and adults. Our goal is to provide work-readiness and financial literacy tools that can improve our customers’ chances of employment, workplace, economic and social success. We believe that our best customers are people ready to learn and advance on their own terms. As a social enterprise, we hope our programs will support them in improving their lives.

Float Your Boat stands alone or as a complement to traditional career pathway and literacy programs. Our innovative blended learning platform provides lessons and interactive tools that are relevant, easy to understand and applicable to everyday situations. All content and materials are available online and for download and printing.

Float Your Boat is designed to be used in classrooms, individual or small-group tutoring situations, and for independent learning. Our courses are carefully written (and often narrated) to be appropriate for English speakers and English language learners. Our interactive technology is available 24/7 on computers, tablets, and smart phones.

Float Your Boat builds individual capacity and functions as an assessment and compliance tool for a wide variety of organizations. It has been used by agencies and CBOs with immigrant, refugee, OOS/foster youth, TANF, dislocated, unemployed, underemployed, skilled worker, unskilled worker, low-literacy English-speaking, and ESL populations.

Float Your Boat courses are offered on an individual or group subscription basis to organizations, including: workforce development and social service agencies, adult and community education institutions, re-entry and transition groups, libraries; schools, literacy agencies, unions, and trade groups.

"In 2012, Hannah and Jay came to Literacy Volunteers of Sullivan County with the Float Your Boat curriculum for our senior tutors to evaluate. We made comments and suggestions. They continued to check in with us, and we are very pleased with the final result. Float Your Boat Media lessons are well conceived and effective for students who have learned to speak English at a fifth-grade level and above. The Spanish/English audio means the website is accessible for students who have limited literacy in Spanish and English. The audio also provides useful guidance for pronunciation. Float Your Boat makes it easy for our students to work on their own, as well as with our tutors. In addition to being helpful for Spanish-speaking students, the English side of the website can be used by our low-literacy English speakers. We use Float Your Boat to help our students become better equipped to get jobs. It's practical, functional, and easy to use."

- Connie Keller, Executive Director, Literacy Volunteers of Sullivan County

"Float Your Boat is an English for Special Purposes Course that is easy to use and guides the learners through sometimes unfamiliar stages of their work life. It helps the learner address employment situations that could be challenging in a foreign/second language. As an experienced Language Instructor, I can see these topics appropriate for role-plays, discussions and debates in a classroom setting, making FYB a focused resource for ESL teachers."

- Marian Valladares Smith, New York City

"I manage a building maintenance business and my workers come from many countries. We found the Spanish audio easy to understand and the English audio good for building confidence for pronunciation. The lessons are useful for everyday work situations. We are very busy with work and family and appreciate that we can use the program when and where we have the time. This is a good way to learn English you can use on the job."

- Jonathan Idrogo, New Jersey
